Peter Pan is not an elf

Description

I had to make this. *shakes his fist at The Walt Disney Company* These days Disney seemingly owns Peter Pan, for everywhere you look it's the elf from that over-rated Disney cartoon and people think that's the truth! And that's not the way it was supposed to be.

FACTS:

1.) Peter Pan was created by a scottish play/novel writer James Matthew Barrie, originally in 1902 in a book directed essentially at adults.

2.) Peter Pan is NOT an elf but a human boy child who ran away from home as a 7-days old baby, lived with fairies and birds, and grew to not know whether he's a human or a bird, longing to be like normal children.

3.) Peter Pan DID want to grow up in the first place. He never planned to run away and never come back. When he was approximately 6-8 years old, he returned home in means to stay with his mother forever and always, but the window was barred for his mother had forgotten all about him and replaced him with another son.

4.) Peter Pan is not a pre-teen nor an elf but a very young human boy who has a deep mother-issue and trauma causing him to hate adults, think mothers over-rated, and pretend that he doesn't want to grow up. (As in part of him really doesn't want to because he's traumatized and hurt, but on the other hand through all that pain, a part of him - the boy he used to be, does want to.)

5.) Neverland is not a wonderous candyland with no negative sides. It has a very sinister aspect to it. There was a chain of murder going on and Neverland is a seperate entity that makes you forget about your past and family and has your family forget all about you. Peter however was not able of connecting the loss of his mother to this because he'd been there for years when his mummy still remembered and cried after him, but then after only a few months, he no longer existed to her.

Mr. Barrie never confirmed if she really had forgotten, but Peter believed it was true + the way Barrie spoke to Peter at the event and had everyone else too (except Wendy) to forget about Peter, it is most likely not just Peter's belief but also the author's intent.

Peter and Wendy seemed to share a special bond; whereas everyone else forgot about Peter, Wendy still remembered and loved him even after many decades had passed by. And whereas Peter forgot even Hook and Tinkerbell, he still remembered Wendy even after the many decades. The reason why he came back too late and she'd grown up long ago, is that he had no sense of time.

6.) Peter Pan is a very complex, tragic and sinister character all in all.
- Though Peter, his story and Neverland do tribute the childhood theme, I do not think they were originally supposed to idealize eternal childhood, but rather cast light on and remind of the significance and importance of family and mother/child bond. You'll understand if you read the novels.
- I warmly recommend to read all about him from the two canon novels, both written by J.M. Barrie. They are Peter Pan and Peter Pan in Kengsinton Gardens. (Note: some prints of the novel Peter Pan go by the original title 'Peter and Wendy' or 'Peter Pan and Wendy' but it's otherwise the same book.)

X Do not mistake official for canon. Even though the novel called Peter Pan in Scarlet is official sequel, it is nothing more but a fan novel written many decades after Mr. Barrie's death. Keep in mind that the book is canon only if its author is J.M. Barrie.

X The original novels by J.M. Barrie are in open/public domain.

X The most novel-faithful movie adaptation is Peter Pan (2003) directed by P.J. Hogan, starring Jeremy Sumpter, Rachel Hurd-Wood and Jason Isaacs. Perfectly beautiful movie in itself and very respectable adaptation.
- The biggest flaw in it is that it drops like a million hints to Peter's mother-issue but never actually reveals it.
- Another remarkable flaw is that in that movie Wendy and her brothers are in Neverland only for 2 days. This was borrowed from Disney, yet this movie tried to capture the novel's darkness and depths. Naturally that combo creates a huge illoginess. In the novel Wendy and her brothers were lost for at least many days, weeks, months or even years. Thus in order to make sense with the more novel-faithful emotional and storyline depth, this movie should've used the novel's timeline too.
- The major difference to the original novel is that the movie has a two-way romance between Peter Pan and Wendy whereas in the novel Peter saw Wendy as only his "mother" while Wendy loved Peter romantically.
